A MAJOR TOPIC WAS OUR WORK WITH MR HOWELL. He is the ex-head of art at Motueka High School. He taught us how to do kowhaiwhai panels using folded paper and tracing, to that they were symmetrical. The border patterns are based on a traditional Maori design. The spiral, or koru, is a prominent feature in Maori art. It represents the new unfurling frond of the Silver Fern, and symbolises birth or new life, which is one of the reasons we felt it was a good pattern to use. The koru is a particularly common design and is often used in a repetitive fashion, as in the kowhaiwhai. The central figure is Tangaroa, the Sea God.

This first slideshow shows us working towards our individual efforts. The second shows our wall displays
